. From a survey of 350 Web Marketing Today (Free Edition) readers in July 2005, the following demographic profile emerges:
The typical Web Marketing Today reader is male (65%), in his mid-30s to mid-50s, a part- or full-owner of his own business (67%), conducts Business to Consumer e-commerce sales (50%), and has a budget for Internet promotion of $3,000 to $25,000 (40%). The typical reader works in single-person (32%) or 2-to-6 employee (34%) companies that do business on the Internet, though 34% of readers are employees in larger companies.
Readers work in all kinds of industries, led by retail trades (16%); website developers (12%); advertising, PR, and marketing companies (10%); and media and publishing companies (9%).
65% of readers have the authority to specify, recommend, or purchase Internet-related products and services, with more than 50% working in businesses where they have all or most of the Internet responsibility.
Web Marketing Today readers are found in 200 countries and territories around the world, with a predominance in the United States (64%), Canada (8%), the UK (7%), and Australia (4%), with the other 17% in other countries.
Here are the results of the survey in graphical form:
Web Marketing Today readers are old enough to be serious about Web marketing and
a large enough role in their businesses to purchase or select the
services and products their business need.
Web Marketing Today readers tend to have a large stake in the e-business they
operate, with two-thirds full or part owners. The other their are
likely to have Interest marketing responsibility for the
companies that employ them.
While 36% of Web Marketing Today readers are business owners or managers, there
are a significant number of others in various roles supporting
the website and online business.
Two thirds of Web Marketing Today readers are presently engaged in e-commerce,
that is, selling products online. Half of readers sell products
to consumers, 27% sell to other businesses.
Web Marketing Today readers tend to represent small businesses. While 39% have
less than $3000 to spend, 40% have budgets from $3000 to $25,000,
and 21% have budgets ranging from $25,000 to over $5 million.
32% of Web Marketing Today readers are the sole employees of their online
business. 34% work in companies of 2 to 6 employees. The
remaining one third are in larger companies.

Web Marketing Today readers aren't confined to a single industry, but represent
all kinds of businesses. The top industry is retail trades (16%),
indicating the strong number in online B2C e-commerce. Another
concentration is website developers (12%) who often influence
their clients' decisions for purchasing services and products to
facilitate online business. Next is a group in Advertising, PR,
and Marketing (10%). Some of these will be firms seeking to
advertise their own services to promote their clients'
businesses. There is a concentration in media and publishing
(9%), those who influence others by what they write. You also
find influencers and purchasers among Internet consultants (7%),
other consultants (7%), and educators (7%).

Web Marketing Today readers are truly cosmopolitan, found in 200 countries and territories, though
nearly two-thirds are in the United States. Concentrations of
readers are also found in Canada (8%), the UK (7%), and Australia
(4%).
