Dan Janal's Guide to Marketing on the Internet Dan Janal's Guide to Marketing on the Internet
by Daniel S. Janal
Wiley, 2000
Trade Paperback, 392 pages

One of my pet peeves about Internet marketing books is that they either are written for Internet newbies who don't know how to turn on a computer, or they focus on marketing professionals who are light years ahead of business people who are just trying to learn how business is done online. This book strikes a middle ground. Janal has a way of explaining online marketing techniques in a simple way without insulting one's intelligence. And he covers the array of marketing techniques pretty completely and in enough detail to give the reader a running start. His goal is to help the reader integrate Internet marketing into a company's overall marketing efforts.

The book is divided into six parts: (1) online marketing strategy, (2) online selling, (3) promoting your website, (4) creating customers for life with one-to-one marketing programs, (5) online marketing tools, and (6) online public relations. The book's 28 chapters provide remarkably specific help with chapter titles such as: "Writing Interactive Ad Copy," "Promoting Your Web Site with Search Engines," "Measuring Return on Investment," "Building Relationships with E-Mail and Private Mailing Lists," and "Buying and Selling Banner Ads."

Order the book by clicking here Though the current title is new, this is actually the fourth edition of Janal's well-known Online Marketing Handbook, updated for new millenium. Janal's online marketing goes back to the days when he was on America Online's PR team introducing this online giant to the world. There is a growing number of excellent books on Internet marketing, but for my money Dan Janal's Guide to Marketing on the Internet is the first book I'd recommend to a business person trying to get a basic grasp of doing business online.
