Shoppers’ worries about using credit cards online go beyond identity theft

Dr. Ralph F. Wilson, Wilson Internet Rocklin, CA - Jul 21, 2004

Jupiter Research analyst Bruce Cundiff studied consumer concerns about online transactions. Though responses varied between various groups studied, the research indicated that there were concerns beyond stolen credit card information:
  • Personal information will be sold or given to others and result in spam, 50%
  • Unauthorized recurring transactions, 34%
  • Merchants not shipping products, 30%
  • Merchants will debit the card for a higher than advertised price, 20%

Older consumers were particularly concerned with identity theft. For more information, see the article in Internet Retailer, June 10, 2004. http://www.internetretailer.com/dailyNews.asp?id=12179

As a result of reading this information, I changed several of my landing pages to include assurances about identity theft and recurring billing, as well as checking to make sure my privacy policies were clear.
