| Extranet | An extranet is a private business network using Internet technology, located outside a corporate firewall, to enable communication and transactions between a business and its suppliers, vendors, and contractors. |
| VAN | Value Added Network. An expensive proprietary network using traditional network technology, which links a large business with its suppliers, vendors, and contractors. |
| Trading Partners | Companies which exchange EDI documents with each other are referred to as trading partners. |
| EDI | Electronic Data Interchange, a data fields standard which allows companies to exchange financial documents such as invoices and purchase orders. |
| OBI | Open Buying on the Internet is a standard being promoted by American Express, that uses existing EDI standards to define the format, content, and security required in online purchase orders and other purchasing-related documents. |
| S/MIME | S/MIME is an encryption protocol which allows secure transmission of documents via e-mail. |
| SSL | Secure Sockets Layer is the encryption protocol commonly used to secure Web browser to Web server communications. |
