User Feedback:I live in the UK and boy is it difficult to get things sorted over here. Firstly, due to our very strict Data Protection laws, it is actually against the law for a business that is operated from the UK, to have a merchant account in any country other than the EU countries which fall under the Data Protection Act. The Data Protection Act is basically an iron clad system that protects a persons information from fraudulent use. It is thus stated that if a UK citizen give his personal information to a US website, he knows that there are inherent risks of fraud as the States do not have as stringent Data laws as the EU. If, however, he purchases from a site in the UK and his details are somehow used for fraudulent purposes, he can sue the website owner for sending his details to a country outside of the EU, for processing (i.e US Merchant Account). Very few UK site owners are aware of this though. Therefore I have set up a Merchant account with a UK provider. I have my own Merchant Account with Barclays Merchant Services (a major banking conglomerate over here). The site is hosted with JP Interactive ( http://www.get-trolleyed.co.uk , miles@direct2u.co.uk ), who also provide the shopping cart and secure server. I paid £300 to get the software from Get Trolleyed and £200 for a years technical support contract. The set up fees for Barclays were reduced from £250 to £50 because of a deal JPI have with Barclays. The shop is administered through a browser and has a lot of good features. You need to be a bit of a techie to get through some of it though, especially the initial setup, but the tech support guys are fabulous. They are not big on bespoke autoresponders and all the other fancy stuff I need for my site and I've had to get my website developer ( http://www.alphaserve.co.uk , daniel@alphaserve.co.uk ) to programme unique Perl and Java scripts for me and integrate them into the shop software. The user interface for adding products, changing shipping options, adding VAT, etc is very good and is pretty user friendly, and the transactions are processed with an e-mail being sent to you with all the details you need to process the orders. More of a physical product shop though as opposed to an information product shop. I hope this will be of help in your research. If anyone in the UK should need advice, please don't hesitate to refer them to me, if you'd like. -- Lisa van den Berg Shamba Direct UK

User Feedback:I use www.securetrading.com they are based in Cardiff, Wales. They partner with LloydsTSB Cardnet which is the UK's biggest bank and credit/debit card provider/processor. Their support guys are great. They create simple http upload/download access to their server (no ftp for security) and will help you make changes to text documents which are easily uploaded into their custom Perl/CGI scripts. They accommodate most shopping cart systems (or you can simply use online forms/multiple forms), deal with transactions in any currency and are up 24/7. I couldn't recommend them any higher. -- Mike Grehan, Design WorksMy son's business uses Secure Trading (a UK company) http://www.securetrading.com. User Feedback:I am a Director of a small luxury goods e-commerce site in the UK. our payment gateway is Netbanx. We selected this company because when we set up (12 months ago) the UK banking systems was (still is) cool towards online trading provisions for companies with no trading history. We have found Netbanx very friendly and helpful. They provide on-line access to our account. We have Bureau merchant status with them while we move to full merchant status, and monies are released after (phew) 60 days. It's tough. We have had some minor snarls - occasionally a payment I know has gone through does not get reported to us for 36 hours. We have had only one crdit card fraud attempt and consequent chargeback, and they were efficient and helpful. The set up was (relatively) straightforward, but the material they went was updated without our knowng it. They are weak on technical support - we needed to update our payment confirmed HTML pages, and their technical dept just couldn't get a simple, minor text and graphic alteration correct. Would I recommend them? Yes. But I think we moving more and more to the mind of bankng with a non-UK (probaboy American/Canadian operation in a few months. -- James Gladwin Styleisland.com UK
| Seem to have sewn up a large part of the UK market. I'm a bureau merchant, have been with them since just after they got going (Feb 1999) Costs 4% up to 2000 GBP a month turnover, 3% 2000-5000 GBP minimum 10 pounds monthly plus 4% of turnover to acquiring bank + 17.5% VAT on top of their charges making an 8% basic charge into 8 * 1.175 = 9.4% Usually works OK, but from time to time transactions seem to fail for no good reason, which obviously costs lost sales and annoyance. This particularly happens from Eastern European clients. They have a fairly aggressive fraud screen, which seems to screen out more cards and IP addresses than necessary. Since I sell electrons (eBooks) fraud does not hurt me, but the lost sales do :( So I've just converted over to a proper merchant account and I'm going to get them to reduce the security level so more of my transactions go through. ) Usually quite difficult to get technical support. They were quite good at customer service until they cut a deal with demon internet (unfortunate name) one of the biggest UK ISPS to offer an ecommerce package to Demon users. This got them a lot of new clients and they grew faster than they could cope. We're looking for something more flexible and better. I think they're good for a small business operating from a simple site that sells one or two products and is able to write their own back-end scripts. -- Alex Eames UK | |
