Yahoo! Groups

Yahoo!

http://www.yahoogroups.com

Premier free, advertising-supported listserver. Lists can be configured for announcement or discussion lists. A group can have multiple moderators with differing levels of permission. Members can share files and pictures, access a flat-file database and chat room. Online archives, both HTML and text messages, welcome messages and mini-site, subscribe using e-mail forms. Yahoo acquired eGroups, now integrated into Yahoo's member services. See my recent comparison of the Yahoo! Groups and the free version of Topica. http://www.wilsonweb.com/wmt7/lserver_free.htm

Strengths: It's easy to navigate and a plus to be able to have it delivered right to your email address or the option of reading it on the web. Plus you can have email sent every day or digest version or even a summary. That's nice. It's easy to block unwanted subscribers who caused problems reset bouncing emails to listmembers place to upload files for others database for listmembers to access for whatever you set it up for deleting members adding members yourself....lots of goodies!

Weaknesses: I don't like the fact that if you want to subscribe you have to register. Nosey nosey nosey! If you have a subscription box on your webpage for people to join it's not as simple as just putting your email address in and voila! You have to actually go to Yahoo.com and register with a password. A lot of confusion and trouble for newbie users.

Missing? Nothing really except for maybe having it an option to register or not.

Ease: 3

Strengths: It is free and has quite a few extra features like moderation calendars file uploads group reminders searchable web message archives and easy-to-use web-based subscription management.

Weaknesses: Because it is free it is ad-heavy. Ads are placed at the bottom of every message the website has many ads and has now implemented full page ads which are a source of great confusion. Service can be somewhat unreliable. Their privacy policy says they won't sell addresses but with the state of the web right now I'm nervous that that policy could change at any time. I worry about the privacy of the messages too. (We're a cancer support group) That's why I'm shopping for a paid service.

Missing? Better archive search by author and date range. I'd be willing to pay to turn off the ads and guarantee that the addresses of subscribers would never be sold.
