Theme: Starting an E-Business on a Shoestring, Step 5
Issue 97, March 1, 2001

Dear Friends,

Dr. Ralph F. Wilson, E-Commerce Consultant In this issue we continue our series of starting an e-business on a shoestring. Though it may seem contradictory, I contend that website design is something you should outsource to a professional and not do yourself, no matter how short your shoestring. I explain why in the article.

February has been a month for research on HTML e-mail, since I continue to use it and explore other uses. I am reporting on conclusions from that research in this issue, too.

Step 5. Obtain Professional Website Design

If you want to succeed on the Web, the money you spend for professional website design will repay itself many times in increased business. Here's why. Read the Article

HTML E-Mail Research

Over the past month we've been conducting independent research on HTML e-mail. Two of these four studies are available free to our Web Marketing Today readers. All are available to our paid Web Commerce Today subscribers.
  • HTML E-Mail Capability of E-Mail Client Programs. A brief table evaluating the HTML capability of various e-mail client programs used by your subscribers and e-mail list members. From this you can determine how well your HTML e-mail is being read. See the survey results

  • HTML E-Mail Text Font Readability Study. Finds Arial 12 pt. most readable for body text over 12 pt. Times Roman. Verdana 10 pt. and 9 pt. are preferred over smaller sizes of Arial. See the study.

  • Using Secure HTML E-Mail Order Forms. How realistic is it to use HTML e-mail order forms? I think the time has come -- with a few caveats. Here's why I think so and how to do it. Read the Article (requires subscription).

  • Survey of HTML E-Mail SSL-Submission Capability. Not all e-mail client programs will submit an HTML form securely. Here are the programs that will and won't work. See the comparison chart (requires subscription).

  • Strong Opinions on HTML E-Mail. Some people actually hate HTML e-mail -- just for a bit of perspective from some of our Doctor Ebiz. readers. Read the Letters.

Web Marketing Links

Every month we scour the Internet to find links to articles and resources on Web marketing. Here are the ones we found for February 2001. Here are the articles we found for February 2001:
